Terms of Use

Welcome to Sanctuary OS. These terms govern your use of our tactical mod management systems. By accessing our platform, you agree to comply with our security protocols and operational standards.

1. Acceptance of These Terms

Sanctuary OS (“Sanctuary”, “we”, “our”, or “us”) provides software tools and a website that help users manage mods for The Sims 4. By accessing or using our website, software, or related services (collectively, the “Service”), you agree to these Terms of Use (“Terms”). If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

2. What Sanctuary OS Is (and Is Not)

  • Sanctuary OS is a mod manager and operating system layer for The Sims 4. We provide tools and metadata to help you organize, analyze, and manage mods that you obtain and store yourself. We do not: Sell any products or services; Host or distribute mods, game files, or other copyrighted content; Operate a marketplace or store; Provide downloads of mods or game content. You are solely responsible for obtaining and managing your own game, mods, and files from lawful sources.

3. No Affiliation with EA / Maxis

  • Sanctuary OS is an independent project. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Electronic Arts Inc. (“EA”), Maxis, or The Sims 4. “The Sims” and “The Sims 4” are trademarks or registered trademarks of EA. Any references to EA, Maxis, or The Sims 4 are for descriptive purposes only. You must comply with EA’s and any other third party’s terms when using their games, content, or services.

4. Eligibility

  • You may use the Service only if: You are at least the minimum age of digital consent in your region (or have parental/guardian consent where required); You have the legal right to enter into these Terms. By using the Service, you represent that you meet these requirements.

5. Accounts and Security

  • Some features may require an account. If you create an account: You must provide accurate information; You are responsible for keeping your login details secure; You are responsible for all activity under your account. If you believe your account has been compromised, you should notify us promptly using the contact details below.

6. License to Use the Service

6.1 Website and Non‑Code Content Subject to these Terms, we grant you a limited, non‑exclusive, non‑transferable, revocable license to access and use the website and any non‑code content (such as documentation, branding, and UI assets) for your personal, non‑commercial use, unless otherwise stated. This license does not allow you to copy, modify, or redistribute our non‑code content except as expressly permitted by us or by applicable law.

6.2 Software Licensed Under GPLv3 The Sanctuary OS software itself (to the extent identified as such in our repositories or documentation) is licensed under the GNU General Public License, Version 3 (GPLv3). The GPLv3 license controls your rights to copy, modify, and redistribute the covered code. These Terms do not limit or override your rights under GPLv3. If there is any conflict between these Terms and GPLv3 with respect to the covered code, GPLv3 prevails. 7. User Responsibilities and Acceptable Use

You agree that you will not use the Service to:

  • Violate any law or regulation, including copyright or other intellectual property laws.

  • Infringe the rights of EA, Maxis, other game publishers, mod authors, or any third party.

  • Enable or promote:

    • Cheating, exploits, or unfair advantages in online play.

    • Harassment, hate, or abusive behavior.

    • Distribution of malware, spyware, or other harmful code.

  • Upload, link to, or reference content that is:

    • Illegal, defamatory, or fraudulent.

    • Pornographic, excessively violent, or otherwise inappropriate under applicable law.

  • Attempt to:

    • Reverse engineer or interfere with the Service except as allowed by GPLv3 for the covered code.

    • Bypass security or technical protections.

    • Overload or disrupt our infrastructure.

You are solely responsible for how you use the Service, your mods, and your game.

8. Third-Party Games, Mods, and Tools

The Service may interact with:

  • The Sims 4 and other games.

  • Mods and tools created by third parties.

  • External websites, repositories, or services.

We do not control or endorse any third‑party content or services.

  • Your use of third‑party content is at your own risk and may be subject to separate terms.

  • You are responsible for ensuring you have the right to use any mods or content you load into Sanctuary OS.
     

9. Intellectual Property

Except for the software code covered by GPLv3 and any third‑party content, all rights in and to the Service (including our name, logo, branding, and original content) are owned by us or our licensors and are protected by applicable intellectual property laws.

You may not use our trademarks, logos, or branding without our prior written permission, except as allowed by applicable law (for example, fair use).

10. No Sales, No Payments, No Refunds

Sanctuary OS does not currently sell products or services and does not process payments through the Service.

  • There are no purchases, subscriptions, or paid features provided directly by us at this time.

  • As a result, there is no refunds or billing policy applicable to Sanctuary OS itself.

If you support us or related work through third‑party platforms (such as donation or sponsorship services), your relationship and any payments are governed by those platforms’ terms, not these Terms.

11. Changes, Updates, and Availability

We may update or change the Service at any time, including by:

  • Adding, modifying, or removing features.

  • Releasing new versions of the software.

  • Temporarily or permanently suspending parts of the Service.

We may also update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will change the “Last Updated” date above. Your continued use of the Service after changes become effective means you accept the updated Terms.

We do not guarantee that the Service will always be available, uninterrupted, or error‑free.

12. DMCA and Intellectual Property Complaints

We respect intellectual property rights and expect our users to do the same. If you believe that content related to the Service infringes your copyright or other rights, you can follow the process described in our DMCA / Content Takedown Policy.

13. Privacy and Cookies

Your use of the Service may involve the collection and processing of certain information, such as basic technical logs or account details.

By using the Service, you acknowledge that we will handle information as described in those documents.

14. Disclaimers

The Service (including the website, software, tools, and metadata) is provided “AS IS” and “AS AVAILABLE”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, including but not limited to:

  • Implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non‑infringement.

  • Any warranty that the Service will be secure, error‑free, or that it will not affect your game, saves, or mods.

You are solely responsible for backing up your game, saves, and mods before using Sanctuary OS.

Nothing in this section is intended to limit or exclude any warranty or remedy that cannot be excluded under applicable law or under GPLv3 for the covered code.

15. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, in no event will Sanctuary OS, its contributors, or maintainers be liable for:

  • Any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages.

  • Any loss of data, game saves, mods, profits, or goodwill.

  • Any damage to your game installation, mods, or hardware arising out of or in connection with your use of the Service.

Our total aggregate liability for any claim related to the Service will not exceed the greater of:

  • The amount you paid us for the Service in the 12 months before the claim (which is currently $0, as we do not sell anything); or

  • The minimum amount required by applicable law.

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations of liability, so some of the above may not apply to you.

16. Governing Law and Dispute Resolution

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, USA, without regard to its conflict of laws rules.

Any dispute arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Service will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state and federal courts located in New York, New York, USA, and you consent to the personal jurisdiction of those courts.

If you are a consumer in a jurisdiction that requires different protections, mandatory local consumer laws may apply.

17. Termination

We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service at any time, with or without notice, if we believe you have violated these Terms or used the Service in a way that could harm us, other users, or third parties.

You may stop using the Service at any time. Sections that by their nature should survive termination (including, but not limited to, Intellectual Property, Disclaimers, Limitation of Liability, and Governing Law) will continue to apply.

If there is a conflict between these Terms and GPLv3 with respect to the covered code, GPLv3 controls.
